This was a British Indian Army cantonment region, situated in the capital district of Uttarakhand State, India. The cantonment of British army was constituted in the year 1866 by Colonel Hume of the 55th regiment. In the past times, the destination was famous by the name of Jaunsar Bawan. It is a beautiful hilly destination, about 100 meters North West side of Dehradun city. The area comprises of two magnificent hills, Chakrata and Kilani. The location is also popular as the hub for elite Special Indian forces. From administrative point of view, Chakrata is a sub division of Dehradun district. It was projected in 2001 census that the total population of the region is around 3497.

This is another major attraction in Chakrata. Kalsi is mainly popular for featuring an Ashoka Pillar Rock Edict that was erected back in 450 BC. The edict, which is built out of quartz, measures 10 ft in length and 8 ft in breadth. It's a site of high historical significance.
