The legend states that sage Vyas Rishi advised the Pandavas that since they were culpable of slaying their own relatives during the Mahabharata war, their act could be pardoned only by Lord Shiva. Consequently, the Pandavas went in search of Shiva who was avoiding them since he was convinced of the guilt of Pandavas. In order to keep away from them, Shiva took the form of a bull and went into hiding in an underground safe haven at Guptakashi, where Pandavas chased him. But later Shiva’s body in the form of bull’s body parts rematerialized at five different locations that represent the "Panch Kedar" where Pandavas built temples of Lord Shiva at each location, to worship and venerate, seeking his pardon and blessings. Each one is identified with a part of his body

 

First Kedar Kedarnath Temple 3,583 m (11,755 ft)
Hump of Shiva seen here. Holiest of the Shiva's shrines and one of the most popular places of pilgrim among the thousands of devotees that throng this place. It is believed that the people who die at this very place become the Shiva's mate for ever. The temple of Kedarnath is located at a height of 3,583 mts which stands at the head of the Mandakini river with the lofty Kedarnath peak keeping vigil above it. This temple is dedicated to Sadasiva or the invisible form of Shiva and is represented by a natural rock formation.

Second Kedar Madmaheshwar Temple (3,490 m or 11,450 ft)
Navel and stomach found at this place thus naval part of the Lord Shiva is worshipped at this temple. Madmaheshar is located in the Mansoona village of Garhwal Himalayas in Uttarakhand. Attitude is 3,490 m (11,450 ft).

Tritiya Kedar Tungnath Temple (3,680 m or 12,070 ft)
The Tunganath means : Lord of the peaks.It is situated in between the Mandakini and Alaknanda river valleys.Tungnath is the wold's highest temple of Lord Shiva located in Rudraprayag district, Uttrakhand, India. It is located at the attitude of 3,380 meter (12,040 ft)

Tungnath is identified as the place where the hands of the bull were seen and now are are worshipped.


Fourth Kedar Rudranath Temple (3,559 m or 11,677 ft) 
Head of Shiva found at this place. Rudranath is a Hindu Temple of Shiva located in Garhwal mountains in Uttarakhand. It is located at the height of 3,559 meteres (11,677 ft). It is the third temple to be visited in Panch Kedar.

Fifth Kedar Kalpeshwar Temple (2,200 m or 7,200 ft)
Hair of Lord Shiva were seen here in reference to the above statement. It is located in the Urgam valley in the Garhwal reion of Uttarakhand in India. Its attitude is 2,200 meteres (7,200 ft).Other nearby temples are Boodha Kedar Temple and Dhyan Badri Temple.
